A few days ago I was debating over PC or Laptop. Now I find myself deliberating over the type of monitor I need.
There is no doubt laptops are portable. But a laptop itself is of no use when you are online 14+ hours a day writing blog posts, sending social media updates, reading other blogs and engaging with your readers and peers. The life of a blogger is very busy, and it is also hard on the arms and shoulders.
There is something so leisurely and comforting about sitting anywhere you please with a laptop in your lap. I did it for years and then faced the results – neck pain, back pain and the works. A good posture was recommended, nay, ordered, and it was time to create a proper work desk with table, chair, screen and keyboard. So finally it was time to buy a desktop monitor I could dock my laptop to.
When I think of monitors and desktops, I think of the bulky CRT monitors, yes, the ones that are really heavy to lift. Thankfully, CRTs are now out of vogue. There are new beasts called flat panel monitors, and they are so much lighter. A quick search told me that I had a choice of LCD or LED. I set out to find out the pros and cons of either.
As most of you must know, LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Diode, and LED stands for Light Emitting Diode. After reading a lot of mumbo jumbo on either technology, this is what it boiled down to. A LED desktop offered brighter colors at lower power consumption. It was sleeker than the LCD counterpart. In a LCD panel, there is a risk of diodes burning out leaving you with patches, but this is very rare in a LED.
Price was also an issue. LED monitors are higher priced than the LCD, but if you consider the lower power consumption, they will turn out to be cheaper in the long run. And you are also contributing to saving energy which is something to think about.
After the necessary price comparisons and deliberations, my Samsung LED monitor came home. The wide 21 inch screen lets me work with multiple windows easily or just read in large type which I prefer to do. The Energy Star sticker reassures me that I am being responsible.
And this is how a pain in the neck led me to my LED!
