‘OMG, I have a major crisis’, my friend screamed as she rushed into my home. ‘I accidentally stepped on my phone, and it won’t be replaced for a week. I can’t access a single mobile app. How will I survive?’ she moaned as I tried to calm her down.
It’s true. Smart phones are an integral part of our lives.
We all grew up hearing about how we could have ‘the world at our finger tips’ if we did something – studied harder, played harder, had good manners etc. But there is a new world order now, that of the mobile app. This small piece of code brings the world to our finger tips. So you can tap to send a message and tap to send someone a surprise gift.
It is like we are tap dancing to some tune.
Being a full time blogger, a smart phone is my most valuable tool. I can tweet from restaurants or events that I visit, and take photos whenever something sparks my interest. Just the other day, I stopped on a side street to take a photo of the long line of fruit vendors selling seasonal fruit to post on Instagram.
As a voracious reader, the Kindle app has been one of my favorites because it can be installed on my Android or Windows phone. I am happy downloading books on the run. And the other day, we got an awesome sundress for my gal pal off Myntra. We were having brunch at a bistro here, and we finally agreed on a gift everyone liked. And it was possible because we could just order it off the phone while sipping our mojitos.
Some people say that websites will soon become obsolete and will be replaced by mobile applications. Why? Applications can be customized to the user, and they need very little resources in terms of memory, bandwidth etc.
We are all pressed for time, and who wants to navigate through dozens of screens to get to a product they like? I would rather be able to see what I bought the last time, or have my shoe size, style preferences etc. saved so that I will only see the stuff I like.
There will be a day when such a personalized experience is available.
We may not be building homes on Mars yet, but we can sure tap our way to that little black dress. And those peep toe pumps. That Fendi bag. And oh, wait, that pure silk hand woven pashmina.
You know what I mean?

Don’t know how we lived before all this technology. Totally addicting.
